We welcome the new improvements to Canterbury West station: the new bridge between platforms, the smart new lavatories and the extended ticket hall. However welcome though, they are unlikely to make commuters feel much cheered after Southeastern trains announced huge increases in rail fares. Many commuters face increases of up to 12.8%.
The Green Party strongly opposes these increases and has argued for greater investment to improve services and cut fares. Party leader Caroline Lucas says: "This is supposed to be the greenest government ever, yet its policies are effectively forcing people into the least green travel options. We could find billions of pounds to improve public transport and help reduce fares if we switched funding from pointless road building schemes"
